Lord Edward at the 1265 Battle of Evesham

Matthew Ryan

600 x 400mm
Gouache on board (original)

The Battle of Evesham, fought on the 4th August 1265, saw the death of Simon de Montfort and the release of King Henry 2nd from captivity within the rebel army.

The Inspiration for this painting came from a passage in the chronicle attributed to Arnald FitzThedmar in 1265:

" and at the same hour that the battle took place, there was a very great tempest in London and elsewhere, accompanied by lightening and thunder."
